Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who has renounced actions through yoga, one who has severed all doubts through knowledge, such a self-poised person is not bound by actions, O conqueror of wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna now begins to conclude the fourth chapter with this shloka. He re-emphasizes that one who follows the path of karma- sanyaasa, or renunciation of action, is liberated from all bondage. He refers to Arjuna as Dhananjaya, which means conqueror of wealth, because Arjuna had accumulated massive wealth from conquests of kingdoms. Also, he had gained wealth in the form of knowledge from Shri Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karm is actions involved in prescribed rituals and social duties, sanyas means \u201cto renounce,\u201d while \u201cyog\u201d means \u201cto unite with God.\u201d Here, Shree Krishna has used the word yogasanyasta karma\u1e47a\u1e41, referring to \u201cthose who renounce all ritualistic karm, dedicating their body, mind, and soul to God.\u201d Such persons do their every action as a service to God. Shree Krishna says that their work performed in devotion do not bind them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who has attained the knowledge of self-realization acts without a sense of doership and enjoyership of action. It is important to note that renunciation of action refers to renunciation of doership and enjoyership, not renunciation of the action itself. Actions continue to happen. Furthermore, this yoga or prescribed methodology needs to be learned from a teacher, it is difficult to learn on one’s own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna also reiterates the knowledge of self realization dispels all doubts in the seeker’s mind. Till this knowledge is attained, doubts such as who is the doer of action, who is the enjoyer of results, what is the relation of the self to action will remain. One who has gained this knowledge and dispelled all such doubts is called “aatmavant” or one who has gained knowledge of our own self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here Krishna is summing up the sadhana and the phalam; a person has to go through three levels of sadana. yoga\u1e25 means jnanam; and what is the jnanam; I am the atma which is akarta; akartru- atma- jnanam is called here yoga and by this yoga. A person gets detached from all actions; because actions belong to the body- mind- complex; he allows the body- mind- complex to function in the world; but he does not have over- attachment or identification and therefore he has renounced the karma- identification; this is the first stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the next stage he has negated all the doubts by gaining conviction through mananam; jnanam means conviction; I should be convinced; I need not convince any other person; that is not relevant; and I cannot convince others also; because there are many people who do not want to be convinced. Therefore I should be convinced of this knowledge; I should ask my own mind; are you convinced of this knowledge; and I should study until I am convinced; therefore the second stage is he has removed all doubts through conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the third stage is the nidhidhyasanam stage and in which a person is alert to avoid forgetfulness of this teaching. This is not a teaching to be confined to this particular enclosure; jnanam must be available in my day-to-day life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are like multiplying numbers with 0 (zero). Similarly, the works that enlightened souls perform in the world do not bind them, because they are offered to God in the fire of Yog, i.e. they are done for the pleasure of God. Thus, although doing all kinds of works, the Saints remain unfettered from the bonds of karma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another classic example here is that the space in a pot thinks that it is the pot. Once it knows that it is space, it immediately realizes that it is not subject to modifications like big or small, brown or white, moving or stationary and so on. From that point on, any change to the pot will not affect the space in the pot. Similarly, once our doubts vanish, our actions will not bind us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
