Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having pointed out the defect of finitude in the wide range of yajnyaas, Shri Krishna praises jnyaana yajnya or the sacrifice of knowledge. Another interpretation, but on similar lines, is that the yajnya of knowledge is the only one that leads us to the path of shreyas or bliss, rather than the path of preyas or the pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tells Arjun that it is good to do physical acts of devotion, but not good enough. Ritualistic ceremonies, fasts, mantra chants, holy pilgrimages, are all fine, but if they are not performed with knowledge, they remain mere physical activities. Such mechanical activities are better than not doing anything at all, but they are not sufficient to purify the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional sentiments are nourished by the cultivation of knowledge. For example, let us say that it is your birthday party, and people are coming and handing you gifts. Someone comes and gives you a ragged bag. You look at it disdainfully, thinking it is insignificant in comparison to the other wonderful gifts you have received. That person requests you to look inside the bag. You open it and find a stack of one hundred notes of $100 denomination. You immediately hug the bag to your chest, and say, \u201cThis is the best gift I have received.\u201d Knowledge of its contents developed love for the object. Similarly, cultivating knowledge of God and our relationship with him nurtures devotional sentiments. Hence, Shree Krishna explains to Arjun that sacrifices performed in knowledge are superior to the sacrifice of material things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We learned about the sacrifice of knowledge in an earlier shloka. In this yajnya, we go through three steps to acquire the right understanding and knowledge through study of the scriptures: shravana, manana, nidhidhyaasana. Shravana is listening with complete attention. Manana is deep contemplation on the teachings. Nidhidhyaasana is internalizing the teachings through concentration and meditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why is the sacrifice of knowledge better than the other sacrifices? Shri Krishna offers the answer in the second line of the shloka. He says that all actions culminate in knowledge. If we add the context of karmayoga to this sentence, the meaning becomes : all selfishness that motivates actions completely ends in the realization of infinitude. It is like a river that stops flowing when it reaches, or realizes, the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s dig into this a little deeper. What does it mean to end selfishness? It means that the notion of doership and enjoyership ends. No more does one think “I am doing this” and “I have obtained the result”. Furthermore, this knowledge is permanent. It is not a finite material object like the result of any other yajnya like material yajnya and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First meaning is all the karmas culminate in jnanam. All the karma yajnas reach their culmination only in knowledge. They reach their fructification, only in knowledge, which means all the karma yajnas are useless. Therefore karma yajnas are only indirect means of liberation; jnana yajna alone is direct means of liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second meaning is: Krishna says: All the karma phalam are included in jnana phalam. Samapyate means antharbhavathi; jnanam is superior to karma because all the karma phalams are included in jnana phalam. You know why? The logic is this; all karma phalams are finite in nature; because it is produced in time. You work and you get the benefit; working is finite; the benefit also will be every action has got equal (opposite is not now necessary) reaction, since actions are finite; the results also will be finite; for all karma phalams are finite in nature; whereas what about jnana phalam; the jnanam leads to the knowledge that aham p\u016br\u1e47a\u1e25 asmi, brahma asmi; satyam jnanam; anatham brahmasmi; so jnana phalam is what; infinite. Can infinite be included in finite? No. infinite cannot be included in finite; whereas finite is included in the infinite<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the first reason is what; jnanam is superior, because it is direct means of liberation; through which everybody has to go through. Second reason is jnanam is superior because, in the benefit of j\u00f1\u0101nam all the other karma phalams are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, when we truly understand this highest knowledge that everything is the eternal essence, we identify with infinite and permanent, thereby ending our sense of finitude. Once that happens, we continue performing all our actions. However, all selfish motives behind those actions will have completely vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
