Others offer the outward breath into the inward breath, and also the inward breath into the outward breath. Halting the movement of both these breaths, they constantly engage in praanaayaam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this shloka, Shri Krishna provides more detail around the use of praanaayaam as a form of yajnya. It is to be noted that it no practice of praanaayam should be undertaken without the supervision of a teacher, otherwise it can be harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we saw earlier, praanaas are the life energies within us that enable all our bodily functions including breathing, digestion, circulation and so on. Moreover, they function as the link between the mind and the body. We know that if our mind is upset all the time, our body develops psychosomatic illnesses due to the praanaas linking the mind and the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since our mind and body are connected via the praanaas, we control the mind by controlling the praanaas. In praanaayaam, one regulates the breathing pattern (breathe in – retain – breathe out) as well as the time interval between each breath. This regulation has a direct impact on the mind. Even without studying pranaayaam, we can see that a few minutes of observing our normal breath helps to quieten the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People perform these various kinds of austerities for the purpose of purification. It is desire for gratification of the senses and the mind which leads to the heart becoming impure. The aim of all these austerities is to curtail the natural propensity of the senses and mind to seek pleasure in material objects. When these austerities are performed as a sacrifice to the Supreme, they result in the purification of the heart (as mentioned before, the word \u201cheart\u201d is often used to refer to the internal machinery of the mind and intellect).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even raising the power called Kundalini \u015bakti, is nothing but a pr\u0101\u1e47ic power only; pr\u0101\u1e47ic force; which is a potential one, Kundalini literally means the coiled power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pra\u1e47ayama is also of two types, one is pra\u1e47ayama as a physical exercise; as an exercise for improving the health; then it becomes a secular discipline and veda does not want us to practice pra\u1e47ayama, as a secular discipline, veda wants to convert pra\u1e47ayama also into a religious discipline.  And how to make it religious discipline; when the pra\u1e47ayama is done, utter the namas of the Lord. Either Rama Rama or Krishna Krishna or if a person knows the traditional pra\u1e47amaya mantra, he can chant om bhuhu, om bhuvaha; the moment mantra is included, pra\u1e47amaya is called, sa garbha pra\u1e47amaya; it is a spiritual sadhana. Minus the name of the Lord, it is called agarbha pra\u1e47ayama;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some persons are drawn to the practice of pra\u1e47ayam, which is loosely translated as \u201ccontrol of breath.\u201d This involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P\u016brak<\/strong>\u2014the process of drawing the breath into the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rechak<\/strong>\u2014the process of emptying the lungs of breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antar kumbhak<\/strong>\u2014holding the breath in the lungs after inhalation. The outgoing breath gets suspended in the incoming breath during the period of suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u0101hya kumbhak<\/strong>\u2014keeping the lungs empty after exhalation. The incoming breath gets suspended in the outgoing breath during the period of suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the kumbhaks are advanced techniques and should only be practiced under the supervision of qualified teachers, else they can cause harm. Yogis who are inclined toward the practice of pr\u0101\u1e47\u0101y\u0101m utilize the process of breath control to help tame the senses and bring the mind into focus. Then they offer the controlled mind in the spirit of yaj\u00f1a to the Supreme Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this manner, Shri Krishna adds yet another yajnya to the list of yajnyas that one should pursue in order to gradually develop the ultimate vision that everything is the eternal essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
