So this verse can be taken as either a grihastha-jnani sloka or a sanyasi-jnani sloka; in both ways one can interpret; Sankaracarya takes this verse as the description of a sanyasi-jnani. But this can be taken as a grihastha-jnani also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While progressing in our project, we may encounter several situations, some of which we expected and some that we did not. Shri Krishna guides us on how to deal with these situations in this shloka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By definition, karma yoga inspires us to work relentlessly. The output of our project may be sometimes favourable, and sometimes not. The follower of karma yoga knows that he is one of the many variables that determine the output of his work, and is therefore content with whatever comes his way. He does not let unfavourable outcomes impact his level of work. This is the “prasaada buddhi” that we say earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While living in this world, nobody can hope to neutralize the dualities to have only positive experiences. Then how can we successfully deal with the dualities that come our way in life? The solution is to take these dualities in stride, by learning to rise above them in equipoise in all situations. This happens when we develop detachment to the fruits of our actions, concerning ourselves merely with doing our duty in life without yearning for the results. When we perform works for the pleasure of God, we see both positive and negative fruits of those works as the will of God, and joyfully accept both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Favourable and unfavourable, success and failure, heat and cold, praise and criticism – this is duality. It arises because our mind tends to label one aspect of nature as positive, and reject the other as negative. But the follower of karma yoga knows that nothing is absolutely good or bad. It is all part of Ishvaraa and therefore remains equanimous. This is nothing but “samatva buddhi”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our mind has a natural tendency to compare ourselves with others like us. If it perceives us “better” than others, it generates pride. If it perceives us “inferior” to others, it generates envy. The follower of karma yoga knows that ultimately we are all part of the same higher ideal – Ishvaraa. Any envy generated in the mind only strengthens the ego. So he never lets envy distract him  from his work. It is a quality that he does not encourage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He welcomes whatever happens in life as a result of his karma; so yadrcch\u0101l\u0101bhasantu\u1e63\u1e6da\u1e25; satisfied with whatever comes to him as a result of his action; because we should remember that the events in our life are not totally controlled by us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are one set of people, who claim that they can decide my future; then the second extreme is the fatalistic type, who say that nothing is under my control.  One takes hundred percent responsibility; another takes zero percent responsibility. Gita says both extremes are wrong. Then what is the right attitude; I am only one of the contributory factors with regard to my future. We do not have the total control, then what are the other factors which will control. All the other factors put together, we call daivam. Because the other factors are numerous to enumerate. Right from weather onwards; right from war somewhere else; everything can influence today’s condition. That means the whole world is interconnected and therefore the number of factors that will determine my future is so numerous that instead of enumerating them; we have put all the extraneous factors into one huge bag and we call it daivam; or pr\u0101rabhdam or \u012b\u015bvara iccha, God’s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever comes as karma phalam, it is according to the Law of the Lord that I have to accept that does not mean that we should not work for improving the situation. If the failure happens, I have to accept it because it has happened; and therefore it is choiceless. But at the same time, with regard to the next result; I have got control and therefore I can do, whatever has to be done. Therefore accept the present; work for the future; accept the present; work for the future. So worry cannot change the present; worry cannot change the future also. Present requires acceptance; future requires hard work. This is the simple philosophy of G\u012bt\u0101; present including past, requires acceptance; future requires hard work. Both of them do not require worry. Therefore Krishna said; a\u015b\u014dcy\u0101nanva\u015b\u014dcastva\u1e41;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to our \u015b\u0101str\u0101, competition is not a healthy thing; even though nowadays they say competition alone brings the best out of the people, our \u015b\u0101str\u0101 is not very much in favour of that; \u015b\u0101str\u0101 feels that it is like drug induced power; so when a person takes certain banned drugs in olympic games etc. it is called performance enhancing drugs; but still they ban. Why should they ban?; even though it increases the performance. Side effects are not good; they are powerfully negative. The same is competition, which put us into desire of end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the refrain here is that such a follower of karma yoga will continue to perform actions in this world, yet remain unattached because he never lets external situations destabilize his equanimity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
