Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who begins all actions devoid of desire and resolve, and whose actions have been burnt in the fire of knowledge, he is called a sage (even) by the wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following six shlokas, Shri Krishna gives us extremely practical guidelines to fully internalize the message of this chapter, which is that only by renouncing the sense of doer ship and enjoyers hip can one achieve detachment from action. They are simple, clear, actionable messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when the soul is illumined with divine knowledge, it realizes that the bliss it seeks will be attained not from the objects of the senses, but in loving service to God. It then strives to perform every action for the pleasure of God. \u201cWhatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer as oblation to the sacred fire, whatever you bestow as a gift, and whatever austerities you perform, O son of Kunti, do them as an offering to me.\u201d (Bhagavad Gita 9.27) Since such an enlightened soul renounces selfish actions for material pleasures and dedicates all actions to God, the works performed produce no karmic reactions. They are said to be burnt in the fire of divine knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the true service comes, true work comes out only when there is fullness; and a person’s contribution with fullness will be immensely greater because he does not have any axe to grind; because otherwise whatever activity I take, there will be a tinge of selfishness. Because I want to get something out of it; but Krishna says, a j\u00f1\u0101ni alone can contribute with contentment and now the question is: if j\u00f1\u0101ni has contentment, then what will be the driving force; our scriptures say then the driving force will be purely of compassion; the greatness of wisdom is: the more a person becomes wiser, the more he identifies with the whole world; ignorance makes my mind smaller, selfish, bothered about me and my family; but in the case of a j\u00f1\u0101ni, because of universal identification, there is universal compassion; which is his nature. He does not show compassion; but compassion becomes his nature; just as a mother has got an instinctive love for the child; just as the tiger loves the baby; anybody comes around, it attacks; it is not born out of will; it is nature-driven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine that we are about to undertake on a new project that is part of our field of work, our svadharma. It could be a presentation at work, a new job, moving to a new city and so on. At each step of the project, our mind entertains different questions. We can use this series of shlokas as a guide throughout the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, our mind is fully focused on executing the project in the spirit of karma yoga. But after a while, it will get distracted and tend to wander towards material objects. This distraction will eventually lead to lack of efficiency in our project. Shri Krishna addresses how to deal with this aspect of the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The common meaning of the word “sankalpa” is decision or resolve. Let’s examine the deeper meaning. Whenever we think about an object, there is a constant labelling going on in our mind on whether the object is “good” or “bad”. After having gone back and forth, we label something as “good”. This labelling is called sankalpa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does this labelling happen? It is because our intellect has been superseded by our mind and senses. For example, a bitter medicine may benefit the body holistically. The intellect knows this. But the sense of taste will not like it. Furthermore, this sankalpa or labelling gives rise to kaama, or desire for that object. And herein lies the seed of selfish action that distracts us from the goal. Sankalpa and kaama are interrelated, any one of them indicates the present of the other, but both give rise to selfish action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, Shri Krishna urges us to “burn” our selfish actions with the fire of knowledge. In other words, he wants our intellect to guide us in our svadharma, and stop the mind from labelling objects as good or bad. If something comes to us as part of our svadharma, we must accept it with prasaada buddhi. Like the lotus that remains in the pond and is untouched by the water, we must continually remind ourselves that our eternal essence is different and separate from all actions. Actions are going on by themselves in nature. Therefore, we should remain alert at all times, and should reinstate the supremacy of the intellect over the senses whenever the senses move towards external objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what Dayanand Sv\u0101mi beautifully says: I have rejected myself and when I cannot accept myself, I cannot accept the world also; I find fault with every person, every job, every set up, every house, and whatever it is; the problem is not with the world, self-rejection expresses in the form of world rejection. And self-acceptance, expresses in the form of world acceptance. Again Swamiji beautifully says: a j\u00f1\u0101ni is at home with himself as he is and therefore at home with the world as it is and therefore no more dreaming and projections; he lives in the present day and I am fine as I am; and I enjoy doing whatever I can do, and whatever I have to do. Therefore he does not travel from unhappiness to happiness; therefore his travel is from happiness to happiness to happiness only. What a beautiful state of mind; so happily he succeeds; happily he fails also; happily he gets things done; and happily he is not able to get things done also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
