Meaning:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, he is wise among all people, he is well integrated and accomplishes his actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the 18th to 24th verses, Krishna deals with knowledge which is a solution for all human problems, and this portion is the main and extremely important topic of the 4th chapter. In this portion, Krishna condenses the teachings of all the Upani\u1e63ads; and because of this portion alone and similar portions alone, the Bhagavat Gita is called an upani\u1e63ad; iti shrimat bhagavad G\u012bt\u0101su upani\u1e63adsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because, the essence of Upani\u1e63ad is j\u00f1\u0101nam; one who sees action -inaction must be having the right vision; and I should see inaction in action; that must be the right vision. Shri Krishna employs his poetic prowess to teach us how to apply the knowledge of karma to our actions. He uses the words karma and akarma (action and inaction) differently in different parts of the shloka, so let us take it part by part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every individual, according to Vedanta, which is the basic teaching of the Ved\u0101nta, consists of two parts, one is the body- mind- complex part called anatma; anatma a\u1e41\u015b\u1ea1 or d\u0113ha a\u1e41\u015b\u1ea1; and this<\/p>\n\n\n\n

second part is the consciousness principle, which pervades the body- mind- complex because of which alone the body- mind- complex is sentient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vedanta says, the body- mind- complex is blessed by the consciousness principle. The consciousness principle is called dehi alias atma and the body- mind- principle is called deha; and sometimes called aha\u1e43k\u0101ra also; the ego and the self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore what is wisdom? Accept actions at anatma level; never try to escape from action; and own up the actionlessness or permanent rest in atma level. I am ever restful, peaceful; at atma level; and at anatma level, all the time, one action or the other will be there; this wisdom is called jnana karma sanyasa\u1e25; and this idea Krishna wants to convey in this verse;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, let us understand what is meant by “seeing inaction in action”. The word action in this phrase refers to activity of any sort: thinking, feeling, working. To be clear, even thinking a thought is action. And the word “inaction” here refers to the constant awareness that the eternal essence, our self, is inactive, and not the doer of action. It means complete detachment from the work and detachment from a sense of agency or doership, because the mind has now attached itself to a higher ideal. So therefore j\u00f1\u0101ni sees the inner- actionlessness amidst outer activity. Inner inactionlessness means what; actionlessness at the level of atma; outer- action means what? action at the level of the anatma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So therefore, one who sees inaction in action knows that his every activity is happening out of prakriti or nature. His true identity is the eternal essence that neither does any action not enjoys the result of any action. From a practical standpoint, it refers to the attitude that we have towards our work. It is the difference between a worker who can perform tough tasks and not feel tired, and the worker who feels that every minute of his work is a burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the second lesson that Krishna wants to give is that the body- mind- complex otherwise called aha\u1e43kara or ego, can never be free from action; because it is a finite entity; and it is a material entity; it is made up of matter. Therefore Krishna wants to say that at anatma level, karma cannot be given up, atma level, karma need not be given up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So for example, if someone needs help crossing the road and we think “I won’t help him because I will be late for my bus”. Behind our absence of helping someone cross the road is a selfish motive. Similarly, if we hold back on admitting a mistake that we had committed, our absence of admitting our guilt is driven by a selfish motive. This is seeing action in inaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shri Krishna then goes on to say that one who constantly uses his discrimination to eliminate all sense of doership from every action – that person is wise and is well integrated in the yajna spirit. That person will accomplish any task that he takes up without fail. His success is guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wise person sees the actionlessness of the atma; the permanent peace of the atma; when karma\u1e47i, even when there are actions at anatma level; so he does not find peace by stopping the action; but he discovers peace in spite of action. Wise person sees potential action, karma means potential action, where?, akarma\u1e47i, in the actionlessness of the body- mind- complex. The wise person sees potential action in the actionlessness of the  body- mind- complex, which means, body- mind- complex is ever active; either outwardly- active, explicitly- active or potentially- active; whereas atma is ever actionless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So never try for leisure at the end of action; discover the leisure amidst the action; in spite of the action. So therefore j\u00f1\u0101ni sees the inner- actionlessness amidst outer- activity. Inner- inactionlessness means what; actionlessness at the level of stma; outer- action means what? action at the level of the an\u0101tma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
